Kiah graduated from The Academy of Contemporary Music, Guildford, UK in 2018 with a Diploma and a BA (Hons) Degree in Music Production.
Growing up in an artistic and musically diverse environment, with an artist father and a Caribbean mother, exposed her to a variety of music and visual culture from an early age and helped them to develop an eclectic musical taste.
Interested in found audio, her work predominantly incorporates sampling, loosely inspired by techniques used by early 90s Hip Hop producers. Stylistic components of R&B and Soul can also be heard in the vocals, lyrical content and themes. Elements of ambient, electronic and experimental music in the combined use of FX, synthesis and instrumentation create a unique signature sound. Main influences include contemporary classical music composer Steve Reich, hip hop producer J Dilla, electronic music producers Skee Mask, Daniel Lopatin, and Jamie XX, alongside artists such as Erykah Badu, Alice Glass and Laura Les.
Her work is situated in the crossover between contemporary art and music, a field increasingly being explored by musicians. From Björk to Lady Gaga and Beyonce, the seamless transition between art and music found in the work has been an inspiration. Contemporary artists, such as Laura Provost, Tørbjorn Rødland, Tony Cokes, Arthur Jafa, Sable Elyse Smith, Elizabeth Price, Sondra Perry and Alberta Whittle have been particular influences.
"Issues around gender, sexuality and race are central to my identity and inform many aspects of my work. I also participate in the conversation through activism, reading and debate. My own mental health journey has heightened my creativity, providing me with inspiration and a deep appreciation for the beauty of everyday life."
